Training in Duty of Care and Dignity of Risk

1-Day Course

This interactive workshop has been developed to allow staff, volunteers, and carers to enhance their understanding of their Duty of Care and Dignity of Risk within their organisation and in the delivery of service to clients. Participants will have the opportunity to discuss the implementation of Duty of Care in a variety of service models. Activities and group work will allow participants to develop skills and improve their knowledge regarding Dignity of Risk: that risk is an essential aspect of life and it should not be denied.

On successful completion of this program, participants will:

• develop an understanding of their Duty of Care obligations within the workplace and the obligations imposed on others by the law;
• develop an understanding of other Duty of Care considerations whilst providing a service within the human services sector;
• develop an understanding of the delicate balance between the Disability Act and standards and the OHS Act of NSW;
• learn how to properly report Duty of Care issues to a supervisor;
• learn how Duty of Care encompasses the rights of a person to self-determined independence and dignity; and
• develop an understanding of Dignity of Risk—why it is important, what its limitations are, and how to promote it.
